The underground world is always full of mystery and ready to amaze! This isn’t your average Florida experience—you’re about to step into a world where time seems to stand still, and nature’s beauty is on full display in the form of stunning limestone formations, winding passages, and unique wildlife. Grab your sense of adventure (and a sturdy pair of shoes), and let’s get exploring!

Starting Your Underground Journey

There are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind before you begin. First, make sure to wear closed-toed shoes with a solid grip. The entrance is a set of 33 steps that take you down into this incredible underground realm. As you explore, you’ll encounter everything from large, cathedral-like chambers to tight, narrow corridors. Some areas have ceiling heights of only 4.5 feet and sections that narrow to just 2.5 feet, that require a little ducking and weaving.

Travel light, and be sure to keep an eye on anyone who may need extra help. There are stairways, plus smooth walkways leading you to the deepest part of the cave, about 60 feet below the surface. Be warned, below the surface it’s darkish.

Altogether, the tour is considered moderate to challenging. But that’s part of the experience — and honestly, it’s what makes it so much fun.

General Tour

Cave Enthusiasts

Florida Caverns is the only dry cavern system open to tours in Florida, making it an exceptionally rare treasure. It’s been designated a National Natural Landmark. That means this place is not only beautiful, but it’s also incredibly important to preserve for future generations. The cave is teeming with geological wonders, from the intricately shaped formations to the small, sometimes elusive creatures that call this underground world home.

Tips for a Safe & Enjoyable Experience

Please Plan Ahead:

  • Wear closed-toed shoes with a solid grip. Think sturdy sneakers or hiking boots. There are stairs, rocks, and uneven surfaces that require good traction, so be sure your footwear is up to the task.
  • DO NOT wear the same clothes you’ve wore in other caves. Stop the spread of White-Nose Syndrome, a fungal infection spread through spores that can attach to your shoes and clothing. While harmless to humans it is deadly to bats.
  • Be warned. The cave is near-constant 65 degrees Fahrenheit, which feels refreshing when it is hot, but can feel chilly if you’re sweaty from outside or wet from swimming.
  • NO backpacks, large bags/purses or bulky totes. Tight spaces are tricky enough without extra baggage. Some lockers are available for your convenience, but can fill up on busy days.
  • NO strollers or infant back carriers.
  • DO NOT touch anything in the caves! Do not sit, stand, climb on, or kick anything (chemicals on our hands and skin will destroy the delicate formations)
  • All children must be accompanied by an adult. Keep your children under close supervision at all times within the Cavern.
  • NO food, drink, gum, or candy
  • NO tobacco products or electric cigarettes
  • NO pets (other than service animals as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act). DO NOT leave your pet in a vehicle. Florida is too HOT!
  • NO tripods, monopods, flash photography or drones. Keep it simple. You are welcome to take photos inside the cave with a camera or smart phone.
